In the heart of the Ardennes forest, the 2001 Belgian Grand Prix unfolded as a tale of Ferrari's relentless might and misfortune for several drivers. On September 2nd, during the 14th round of the season, Michael Schumacher clinched an emphatic victory that extended his championship lead.
Michael Schumacher, starting from pole position, powered to a commanding first-place finish in 1 hour, 38 minutes, and 26.533 seconds, leading David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello across the line for Ferrari's third consecutive podium sweep.
Coulthard, starting sixth on the grid, fought his way to second, finishing just over a second behind Schumacher. Barrichello came home in third, 33.491 seconds adrift of his teammate after experiencing issues with his gearbox.
Nick Heidfeld capitalized on Sauber's strong car performance, finishing fourth ahead of Heinz-Harald Frentzen (Jordan) and Kimi Räikkönen (Sauber). Olivier Panis (BAR), starting ninth, claimed seventh place, while Luciano Burti (Jaguar), who started 21st on the grid, valiantly secured eighth.
The race was not without drama as Jarno Trulli (Jordan) and Mika Häkkinen (McLaren) both retired due to engine problems, while Ralf Schumacher (Williams) and Jacques Villeneuve (BAR) collided out of the pits, ending their races.
Schumacher's victory marked his sixth triumph of the season, with 10 points added to his tally, extending his championship lead over Coulthard to a formidable 34 points. However, the Belgian Grand Prix also brought misfortune to several drivers, including Luciano Burti (Prost) who ended up lapping one lap behind.
As the season drew to a close, Schumacher remained unstoppable, leading the pack towards the coveted World Championship title. The championship battle would go down to the wire in the final races of the year, leaving fans on the edge of their seats.
